Learning that a family member is facing a mental health diagnosis can bring up a mix of relief, worry, and uncertainty about what to say next. Families often want to help immediately, which can sometimes come across as pressure rather than support. It helps to remember that reaching out is rarely as difficult as it seems beforehand.

Simple, honest questions work well in this situation, such as asking what would be genuinely helpful right now rather than assuming you already know. Learning about the diagnosis together, at a pace the person is comfortable with, can also help the whole family feel more prepared.

Beyond Blue offers information and support for families on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline is available to anyone in the family at any hour on 13 11 14. This is a reasonable, worthwhile thing to try, whatever else is happening at the time. This is true whether the difficulty has just begun or has lingered for a long time.
