Families often carry expectations that are never directly spoken aloud, about achievement, behaviour, or how feelings should be handled. These unspoken rules can quietly add pressure, especially for someone already finding things difficult. This matters just as much for the person offering it as for the person receiving it.

Naming an expectation out loud, and checking whether it still fits everyone involved, can relieve pressure that has built up over years without anyone intending it. Families that can speak honestly about these expectations tend to feel more genuinely supportive to everyone within them. It helps to remember that reaching out is rarely as difficult as it seems beforehand.

If unspoken pressure has become genuinely heavy, support is available for the whole family. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and Kids Helpline supports younger family members on 1800 55 1800. This is a reasonable, worthwhile thing to try, whatever else is happening at the time.
