Blended families often need to build new routines and new trust from scratch, sometimes while everyone involved is still adjusting to significant change. This process takes time, and expecting instant closeness can create pressure that gets in the way of it. A willingness to try, even imperfectly, tends to count for a great deal here.

Small, shared rituals, a regular activity, a particular meal, a weekly check in, can help a blended family build its own identity gradually. Patience with the pace of that process matters more than trying to recreate what came before. This is worth doing regardless of how the other person responds at first.

If tension within a blended family has felt especially hard lately, support is available for parents and children alike. Kids Helpline is available on 1800 55 1800, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. It is fair to expect some hesitation before taking this step, and that is completely normal.
