Love and boundaries are sometimes seen as opposites, but within a family they usually work together. A boundary, clearly and kindly stated, can protect a relationship from resentment that builds when needs go unspoken for too long. It is worth being patient with yourself while working through something like this.

This might look like a parent saying they need an hour alone after work before talking through the day's events, or an adult child asking that certain topics be raised gently rather than as a surprise. Naming these needs directly tends to strengthen a family rather than weaken it.

If boundaries have been hard to navigate around something serious, support can help the whole family talk it through. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour. This kind of effort tends to be remembered long after the moment itself has passed. None of this needs to be perfect to still be genuinely worthwhile.
