Grandparents as a Steady Presence
Launch library · evergreen read

Grandparents often occupy a unique place in a family, close enough to notice changes but sometimes one step removed from the daily pressures that affect parents and children directly. This position can make them a particularly steady presence during a hard time. A willingness to try, even imperfectly, tends to count for a great deal here.
A grandparent's patience, and their willingness to simply be present without needing to solve everything, can offer real comfort to a grandchild or adult child who is struggling. Sometimes the most valuable thing they offer is simply time, unhurried and freely given. This is worth doing regardless of how the other person responds at first.
If a family member shares something worrying with you, it is alright to gently suggest further support together. Kids Helpline is available on 1800 55 1800, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. It is fair to expect some hesitation before taking this step, and that is completely normal.
