Community health centres exist in most areas and offer an alternative to a hospital or a private clinic, often at a lower cost and with a more relaxed, local feel. For many people, they are an easier first step than they expect. This is worth trying again if it does not go smoothly the first time.

These centres typically offer a range of services, including counselling, general health checks, and referrals to specialist support. Staff are used to supporting people through all kinds of difficulties, and there is no need to already know exactly what kind of help you are looking for. This kind of effort tends to be genuinely appreciated, even when it is not said aloud.

If you would like to talk to someone before visiting a centre, Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and Beyond Blue offers information and support on 1300 22 4636. It helps to keep this simple rather than overthinking exactly what to say.
