School counsellors exist as a familiar, on site option for students who are finding things difficult, whether that difficulty is related to school itself or to something happening at home. Many students are unsure exactly how or when to approach one. This tends to matter most in the ordinary, unremarkable moments rather than the dramatic ones.

In most schools, seeing a counsellor simply requires asking a teacher or the front office to arrange a time, and conversations are treated with appropriate privacy. Counsellors are used to supporting students through everything from everyday stress to more serious concerns. Many people find that the anticipation of this is harder than the moment itself.

Outside school hours, Kids Helpline supports young people aged five to twenty five on 1800 55 1800, and Lifeline is available to anyone on 13 11 14. This is worth trying again if it does not go smoothly the first time. It helps to keep this simple rather than overthinking exactly what to say.
