Recovery is sometimes imagined purely as active effort, therapy attended, changes made, progress pursued. Rest, though, plays just as important a role, allowing the mind and body genuine space to consolidate whatever progress has already been made. Small, steady effort in this direction tends to be more sustainable than a single big push.

This might mean permitting a slower week without guilt, or recognising that a period of apparent stillness is not the same as standing still. Recovery that includes rest tends to be more sustainable than recovery pursued at a relentless pace. It helps to approach this without expecting an immediate or dramatic result.

If rest has felt hard to allow yourself, support can help you find that permission. Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. This is one of those things that gets easier the more often it is practised.
