Hope is sometimes framed as a private, internal feeling, something a person either has or does not have on their own. In practice, hope is often shared, carried partly by the people around us during periods when we cannot hold it entirely by ourselves. This is a reasonable, worthwhile thing to try, whatever else is happening at the time.

This means it is entirely reasonable to lean on someone else's hope for a while, when your own feels thin. A friend, family member, or support worker who believes things can improve can hold that belief steady until it feels more accessible again to you directly.

Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14, both offering a steady voice to lean on. This is true whether the difficulty has just begun or has lingered for a long time. None of this requires getting everything right on the first attempt.
