Staff who deal directly with the public or with colleagues under pressure, retail workers, healthcare staff, hospitality teams, are often well placed to notice when someone is struggling, provided they have been given some basic training and confidence to respond. It helps to remember that most people are more receptive to this than expected.

This training does not need to turn staff into counsellors. It simply needs to cover how to notice a change, how to ask a caring question, and how to point someone toward appropriate support without feeling responsible for solving everything themselves. This kind of consistency tends to be noticed and appreciated over time, even quietly.

Frontline staff should know these numbers are available for anyone: Lifeline on 13 11 14 at any hour, and Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. Nobody needs to have all the answers before taking this step. This is worth approaching gently, without pressure on either side.
