Apprentices and young workers often face a unique combination of pressures, learning a trade, navigating a new workplace hierarchy, and managing financial independence, sometimes for the first time. This mix can make it harder for them to speak up when something feels wrong. There is no need to have everything figured out before taking this step.
A supportive supervisor who checks in regularly, and who makes clear that questions and concerns are welcome rather than a sign of weakness, can make a significant difference to how safe a young worker feels raising a difficulty. Nobody expects a perfect explanation, only a willingness to be honest.
Young workers should know support exists outside the workplace too. Kids Helpline supports people up to twenty five on 1800 55 1800, and Lifeline is available to everyone on 13 11 14. Whatever the circumstances, this kind of care tends to matter more than it seems in the moment.
