Supporting a Friend Through Grief
Launch library · evergreen read

Grief can reshape a person for far longer than the people around them expect, and support that fades too quickly can leave someone feeling alone just as the hardest part of grieving begins. Staying present well beyond the initial weeks matters. There is no wrong way to begin, only a decision to actually start.
There is no need to fill every conversation with comfort. Simply naming the loss, rather than avoiding it, and being willing to sit with sadness without rushing to change the subject, can mean a great deal to someone who is grieving. This can be revisited more than once if the first attempt does not go as hoped.
If grief has become overwhelming, additional support can help. Beyond Blue offers support on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline is available at any hour on 13 11 14. It is worth being patient with yourself while working through something like this. This kind of effort tends to be remembered long after the moment itself has passed.
