Supporting a friend does not mean carrying every part of a difficult situation alone. There are moments when involving a professional, or another trusted person, is not a failure of friendship but a genuinely responsible next step. None of this requires getting everything right on the first attempt.

If a situation feels bigger than the support you can offer, or if you are worried about a friend's immediate safety, it is appropriate to say so honestly, and to help them access further support rather than trying to manage everything yourself. Small, imperfect steps still count as genuine progress.

The Suicide Call Back Service can be reached on 1300 659 467, and Lifeline is available at any hour on 13 11 14, for both of you. This applies just as much on an ordinary day as during an obvious crisis. It is worth remembering that reaching out rarely goes as badly as it feels it might beforehand.
