The first weeks after a friend opens up about a hard time often bring a flurry of attention and support. What matters just as much, though, is what happens months later, once the initial concern has quietly faded for everyone else. What matters most is that the effort is genuine, not that it is perfectly executed.

Staying connected for the long haul might mean a recurring catch up on the calendar, or simply remembering to check in periodically without needing a specific reason. Recovery often continues long after the crisis point has passed, and steady presence matters throughout. This is one of those situations where showing up matters more than saying the right thing.

If ongoing support feels like more than you can sustain alone, that is worth acknowledging. Beyond Blue offers support on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline is available at any hour on 13 11 14. A steady, ordinary approach tends to work better here than a dramatic one.
