Returning to work after time away, particularly time taken for mental health reasons, can feel more daunting than the leave itself. Colleagues often want to help but are unsure whether to mention the absence at all, which can leave the returning person feeling unseen. Nobody expects this to be handled flawlessly, only handled with genuine care.

A simple, warm welcome back, without probing questions, usually sets the right tone. Following up privately to ask if there is anything that would make the transition easier shows genuine care without putting the person on the spot in front of the wider team. This is worth keeping in mind on days when everything else feels uncertain.

Workplaces can also make sure returning staff know what support remains available. MensLine Australia offers support on 1300 78 99 78, and Lifeline is available at any hour on 13 11 14. Patience with this process tends to be rewarded over time. This matters just as much for the person offering it as for the person receiving it.
