Many of us find it easier to support others than to ask for support ourselves. There can be a quiet belief that needing help is a personal failing, when in reality it is simply part of being human, and part of looking after your own wellbeing. It is worth being patient with yourself while working through something like this.

Giving yourself permission to ask for help might mean telling a friend how you are really doing, or picking up the phone to a service built exactly for this purpose. It is not a last resort, and it does not require things to have reached a crisis point first.

MensLine Australia offers support for men on 1300 78 99 78, and Lifeline is available to everyone, at any hour, on 13 11 14. There is no wrong way to begin, only a decision to actually start. This can be revisited more than once if the first attempt does not go as hoped.
