Boundaries as an Act of Self Care

Boundaries are sometimes framed as selfish, but they are more accurately understood as a form of self care. Saying no to an extra commitment, or protecting time for rest, allows you to show up more fully in the parts of life that matter most to you. It is entirely reasonable to feel unsure about how to begin.

Setting a boundary does not require a long explanation or an apology. A simple, clear statement, such as I am not able to take that on right now, is often enough. Practising this in small, low stakes situations can make it easier when the stakes are higher.

If protecting your own wellbeing has felt especially hard lately, support is available. MensLine Australia offers support for men on 1300 78 99 78, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. This is not something that needs to be resolved in a single conversation.
