A common first answer to how are you is fine, even when it is not true. Asking again, gently, and specifically, such as saying you have seemed different lately and wondering how things really are, signals that you noticed and that you meant the question.

This second question can feel repetitive or even intrusive, but for many people it is the moment that makes honesty feel safe. It shows that the first answer will not simply be accepted at face value, and that there is space for something more complicated to be said.

If the honest answer turns out to be difficult, remind them that support exists beyond the conversation. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and the Suicide Call Back Service can be reached on 1300 659 467. It is never too late to try this, even if the moment has already passed once before.
