Rehearsing exactly what to say before a difficult conversation can sometimes make it harder to begin, because real conversations rarely follow a script. Letting go of the need for perfect words, and simply starting with honesty, often works better than any prepared line. This kind of honesty tends to build trust faster than most people expect.

You might begin with something as plain as I have been thinking about you, or I wanted to check how you are really doing. What follows does not need to be planned. Genuine curiosity and a willingness to listen will carry the conversation further than any script could.

If the conversation opens onto something serious, that is a good moment to mention support. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and the Suicide Call Back Service can be reached on 1300 659 467. Nobody needs a perfect opening line to make this worthwhile.
