It is common to speak to ourselves far more harshly during hard times than we would ever speak to a friend in the same situation. Self compassion means offering yourself the same patience and kindness you would readily give to someone else you cared about. Nobody needs to have all the answers before taking this step.

This can start small, by noticing harsh self talk and gently rephrasing it, or by acknowledging that struggling with something difficult does not make you weak or a failure. Practised regularly, self compassion becomes easier to access exactly when it is needed most. It helps to remember that most people are more receptive to this than expected.

If self criticism feels overwhelming, talking to someone can help shift that pattern. Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. This kind of consistency tends to be noticed and appreciated over time, even quietly.
