Holding space means being fully present with someone's difficulty without rushing to change, fix, or resolve it. This can feel uncomfortable, particularly for people who are used to being helpful in more active, visible ways. Whatever the circumstances, this kind of care tends to matter more than it seems in the moment.

Practising this might mean simply sitting with a friend's sadness, without offering solutions, and trusting that your presence itself has value. Not every difficult moment needs to be solved in the conversation where it is first shared. Sometimes the smallest gestures turn out to be the ones people remember most.

If holding space becomes genuinely heavy for you, professional support can help both of you. Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. Often, the hardest part is simply making the first move. It helps to know that plenty of people have felt exactly this uncertain before taking a similar step.
