Support services are sometimes imagined as a last resort, reserved only for the most serious moments. In reality, reaching out earlier, before a difficulty becomes a crisis, is often when support can help the most. This is a normal part of navigating a difficult period, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

A conversation with a GP, a call to a helpline, or an appointment with a counsellor can all happen simply because something has felt harder than usual lately, without any requirement that things have reached a breaking point first. Many people wish they had started this conversation sooner, once they finally did.

Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, for a hard week just as much as for a genuine crisis, and Beyond Blue offers support on 1300 22 4636. This matters even when there is no immediate or visible change to point to.
