For many people, a faith community offers a familiar and trusted source of comfort during hard times. This kind of support can work well alongside professional help, rather than instead of it, offering different but complementary kinds of care. This is not something that needs to be done alone, even if it starts that way.

A conversation with a trusted faith leader can sit comfortably beside a conversation with a GP or counsellor. Neither needs to replace the other, and many people find that combining both gives them a fuller circle of support. A little patience here tends to be repaid many times over.

Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and Beyond Blue offers support on 1300 22 4636, alongside whatever community support you already have. This is worth doing well before it feels urgently necessary. It helps to remember that most people appreciate the attempt, even if it feels clumsy.
