Neighbours occupy an unusual position, close enough to notice changes but often without an established habit of deep conversation. A simple, friendly check in, over the fence or at the letterbox, can still open a meaningful door. It is never too late to try this, even if the moment has already passed once before.

Starting small tends to work well here, such as mentioning you have not seen them around as much lately and asking how things have been. There is no need to force a deeper conversation than the moment allows, only to make clear that you noticed and that you care.

If a neighbour shares something concerning, Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour, and Beyond Blue offers information and support on 1300 22 4636. This tends to feel harder in anticipation than it does once it actually begins. What counts here is genuine attention, not a particular set of words.
