Wanting to help can sometimes tip into wanting to control, especially when we are frightened for someone we care about. Supporting a friend well means offering care while still respecting that the decisions, and the pace of recovery, belong to them. This can start in a small way and still make a real difference.

This might mean offering options rather than instructions, or asking what would actually help rather than assuming you already know. It also means accepting that a friend may not take every suggestion, and that this does not mean your support was wasted. It is worth remembering that support like this exists precisely for moments like this one.

If you are worried that a situation is beyond what either of you can manage alone, professional support can help. Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline can be reached at any hour on 13 11 14. This is something worth returning to, even after a setback or a difficult stretch.
